United States
More than one hundred thousand different Boy Scout postcards have been published just in the United States. It is highly unlikely that any one person or organization can ever accumulate them all. The main purpose of this site is to provide information to help the beginning as well as the advanced collector focus on building a truly unique, personal, and interesting collection. The author decided decades ago that with so many cards to choose from, he could not learn everything about all of them,
and he certainly could not afford to buy all of them, so he began to specialize and narrow his collection. Recognizing the need to do so is the first step to becoming a true collector and not just an accumulator.
Second: begin to categorize all available items.
(What follows is but one way!)
- Official Cards: postcards produced under contract for, and published by, the Boy Scouts of America (BSA.) Some collectors refer to such items as OBS (Official Boy Scout.)
- Non-BSA Scouts: postcards produced by or for competing Scout organizations (generally before 1916.)
- Privately Issued Cards: not affiliated with the BSA, its local councils, or competing organizations.
- People: including Founders of the Scouting movement, U.S. Presidents who supported Scouting, and Other individuals in the U. S. who have had a significant impact on Scouting at the local, national, or international level. The number of such cards is not large, but with diligence it is possible to put together a nice collection.
- Events: local, regional, national or international events in which Scouts from the United States participated.
- Council and/or Locally Printed Cards:
- Real Photo Post Cards (RPPCs):
