The growth of internet shopping has lead to online auctions. The biggest of these is eBay at http://www.ebay.com. The special Coins & Stamps section typically lists over 30,000 philatelic items, including stamps, covers, EFOs, topicals, air mail, back of book, cancels, First Day Covers, and publications. Auctions are for individual items, and can last up to seven days. The largest turn-over of stock is on Fridays. Most offerings on ebay are actually from stamp dealers, some of whom specialize in topicals and cinderellas. I have even recognized SOSSI members offering material from around the world. A short description and scanned image is usually posted on the auction page.
A key word search engine assists in finding Scout-related material. For example, the following key word terms resulting in these items at auction: Scout (36), Girl Scout (6), Jamboree (19), Camp (34), Youth (16), Juliette Low (2), Baden Powell (2), DP Displaced Persons (6). The DP search resulted in offerings for the rare Lithuanian DP Camp issues from Detmold and Augsburg. I have also seen the Czech Scout Post and Siam Scout Fund issues posted.
It is essential for buyers to have a good idea of fair market value for topical stamp items before bidding. Shopping online does give you the opportunity to bid for Scout material not carried by dealers in your local area. There are often good deals, but I have seen US Scout FDC and stamp prices double what I would expect to pay at a stamp show bourse. Buyers also must pay shipping costs. For rarer materials, you might want to avoid paying high prices without expertising.
